LAHAINA, Hawaii -- ??? Jalen Adams drove fearlessly to the rim, dished to open teammates, soared in over taller players to snatch rebounds. The sophomore guard nearly had a triple-double and the Huskies needed nearly every bit of it to hold off a feisty upset-maker.Adams had 25 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, helping Connecticut survive for a 93-82 victory over Division II Chaminade Tuesday in the Maui Invitational. He did a great job leading our team, UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. He did an unbelievable job finding his teammates, scoring and then when we needed a rebound, he got it.UConn (2-3) had all kinds of trouble with Oklahoma States pressing defense to open the Maui Invitational, turning it over 18 times -- all on Cowboys steals -- in a 98-90 loss.On Day 2, the Huskies had a hard time shaking the deep-shooting Silverswords (2-2), who have had a penchant for knocking off big-name opponents.UConn shot 61 percent and had a 20-point advantage in the paint and 13 more rebounds, yet werent able to pull away from Chaminade until the closing minutes.Rodney Purvis had 23 points and hit three 3-pointers in the final 4 minutes after going hard to the floor.Vance Jackson added 16 for UConn, which was without forward Terry Larrier after he injured his left knee against Oklahoma State in the tournament opener.Everybody was just hungry and wanted to get back and prove we can win and compete in this tournament, said Adams, who made 12 of 17 shots. We definitely didnt come down here to lose.Chaminade has a certain mystique around it in Maui, thanks to a long list of upset victories. The Silverswords were blown out by No. 4 North Carolina in their Maui opener, but used their perimeter shooting to stretch the Huskies on defense and keep them from pulling away.Rohndell Goodwin had 20 points, Sam Daly and Kiran Shastri had 19 each for Chaminade, which made 14 of 32 from 3-point range. We were feeling it for a while today, Shastri said. The Silverswords hit 6 of 10 shots to lead 18-13 and, unlike the night, pushed back when a bigger team tried to lean on them.Chaminade trailed by seven, but tied the game at 39-all late in the first half on a layup by Austin Pope and Goodwins short jumper after a turnover on the inbound play. The Silverswords hit 9 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half and were tied with the Huskies at 45-all.Adams carried UConn in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds. The Silverswords continued to go right at the Huskies in the second half, dropping in long-range 3-pointers and driving fearlessly to the rim to stay within 61-60 midway through.UConn finally started to gain some separation as the Silverswords started missing shots they had been making all day.The Huskies stretched their lead to 80-71 on Purvis corner 3-pointer with 5? minutes left and added three more to close the Silverswords out. Those late 3-pointers were the difference in the game, Chaminade coach Eric Bovaird said.BIG PICTUREUConn: The Huskies survived the big upset, yet not being able to shake a Division II opponent is not a good sign. Adams has been stellar in Maui, but the Huskies will need more than just him for the fifth-place game and beyond.Chaminade: The Silverswords have had their share of upsets in the Maui Invitational and nearly pulled off another. Keeping up with a big-time program like UConn should do nothing but build confidence for the Silverswords the rest of the season.UP NEXTUConn: Faces No. 13 Oregon in the fifth-place game.Chaminade: Plays in the seventh-place game against Tennessee. Sally Pearson says she would have risked the end of her athletics career by trying to overcome a hamstring injury and compete at the Rio Olympics. The Olympic 100m hurdles champion says shes gutted at being forced to withdraw from the Rio Games after injuring a hamstring tendon at training on Monday.I could have gone to the Olympics and still competed but competing and going out to the Olympics, it means different things to me, she told the Nine Network on Wednesday.I go there for 100 per cent effort and I wouldnt be able to give that effort that I would like to bring ... and the risk of re-injuring and causing a lot more damage and probably not coming back was very, very high. And I still have Gold Coast 2018 (Commonwealth Games) on my mind ... if I want to be able to come back for that stronger, fitter and faster than ever, then I need to take this time to make sure my body has healed.Pearson had returned to her Gold Coast base to find fitness and form after struggling in three comeback races in Europe earlier this month. The races were her first competitive outings after a year-long absence because of a broken wrist and a torn calf muscle suffered in a fall during a race in June last year. Her comeback was stalled by Achilles and separate hamstring issues before Mondays setback. It is a hard time for me ... Im disappointed and Im gutted, she said.Everyone knows Im a competitor and Im a fierce competitor and I like to represent my country proudly at any competition that I go into.Unfortunately it is the biggest sporting event in the world that I am going to be missing out on and I cant be a part of. Its upsetting.Pearson said she was finally feeling near her best until her fresh injury on Monday, My body finally was starting to feel normal again, it was starting to feel the speed, the strength - it was all coming together, she said.Unfortunately on Monday, my body just didnt agree with me this time.It couldnt push that little extra bit to the edge, I just tumbled over the edge unfortunately this time, and I tore my hamstring. The 29-year-old said the injury was to her biceps femoris tendon in a hamstring. Its not so much just like a tear (sic) hamstring and youll be right in a couple of weeks, it is a tendon injury, Pearson said. The biceps femoris has two heads and I split those two heads.Doing something like that in a tendon injury, it takes a long, long time to get better ... and unfortunately seven weeks out (from the Rio Games) I have done a tendon injury and its not going to allow me to get back in time for the Olympics. He is 2-1 with a 3.25 ERA in four career starts at Rogers Centre, where he had a no-hitter in 2011.Verlander has 115 strikeouts, fourth in the league, in 111 innings. The Blue Jays whiffed 15 times Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals. With Marco Estrada -- who was named to the All-Star team -- going on the disabled list with a sore back on Wednesday, the start on Thursday falls to Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.40 ERA), who has made 15 of his 16 starts this season with Triple-A Buffalo, where he is 6-3 with a 2.78 ERA. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Former Olympic sprint stars and civil activists Tommie Smith and John Carlos earned fame and scorn when they raised their gloved fists on the medal podium at the 1968 Mexico City Games and bowed their heads through the national anthem in protest during the heart of racial tension in the U.S.They were booted out of the Olympic village, condemned and sent home, then eventually celebrated back in the Bay Area years later. As the Rio de Janeiro Olympics prepare to kick off this week, these two men returned to where they shined on campus at San Jose State and now have a 23-foot statue of that history-making moment, helping the university with the announcement Monday that it is reinstating the storied mens track and field program in 2018 after nearly three decades without one.The Olympic project for human rights was started, and it was completed, Smith said Monday. Well stand behind ideas like that `til the day we die. This statue on my right represents you all. John Carlos and Tommie Smith might be the ones who put a foot on those steps, who were standing, but let me tell you, when we walked off, we carried you with us. I humbly thank all of you for the support back then. ... One great man said, `There is redemptive actions in proactive sacrifices, and I thank God that he made it possible and we took those steps to bring it forward. The renowned and respected Speed City track team Smith and Carlos carried to success and Olympic glory is back at last -- with the two sprinters now in their 70s.Smith won a gold medal and Carlos the bronze in the 200 meters in Mexico, committed to their Olympic Project for Human Rights. They wore black socks and no shoes to represent black poverty, raising their fists to symbolize black power.Carlos said he is appreciative of getting another opportunity to come back to San Jose State and see so many people that remember and welcome us back with love, because thats what we exuded all the time we were here, was love for you guys as well. The city of San Jose is embracing the universitys decision, also remembering what Smith and Carlos stood for during their memorable Olympics in Mexico City. That race was at the forefront of national consciousness, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said. It raised our national struggle for racial justice to global consciousness. And of course today, again, race has surged in a national discussion. With many of their former teammates on hand, Smith and Carlos cherished the idea that their legacy would carry on through new young men in track and field in a place that meant so much to their athletic careers. Mens track and field was dropped in 1988.Were also bringing back track and field to honor their courageous stand for human rights, athletic director Gene Bleymaier said. For several years now weve had a dream, a dream that turned into a golden opportunity. The mens program will be reinstated on Oct. 16, 2018, 50 years to the day after Smith and Carlos made their silent protest. The university has a womens program but the team practices 12 miles away at a junior college, so part of Mondays announcement was about the start of a $5 million fundraising campaign to build a new track and field facility on campus. The mens team will begin competition in the spring of 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the schools outdoor track NCAA championship in 1969. One of the more stunning outcomes of the 2015 season occurred when Boise State hosted New Mexico. The Lobos were 30.5-point underdogs and were expected to be another easy home victory for the Broncos. However, New Mexico walked on to the blue turf in Boise, played the better game, and departed with a surprising 31-24 victory.Nobody within the Boise State program has forgotten that stunning defeat or the aftermath. The No. 19 Broncos will try to avenge the astonishing loss when they visit the Lobos on Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M. (9 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network).Last years surprise victory was New Mexicos only win over the Broncos in seven meetings. The victory -- considered perhaps the biggest in school history -- was savored by the Lobos, as nearly all of the players returned to snap photos on the field with the New Mexico state flag to commemorate the achievement.Turned out it was Lobos coach Bob Davie who called for the impromptu photo session. So naturally, the players were only too happy to oblige.Boise is always the top of the Mountain West and always the team to beat, New Mexico senior middle linebacker Dakota Cox said at the Mountain West media day. It was huge for our program to get that win.We all got really excited, and we wanted to take a picture to mark (what) weve been working for and to finally cross over that plateau where were not that little brother that can be pushed around in games and were actually going to win those games now.Boise State coach Bryan Harsin acknowledged that his squad hasnt forgotten what occurred. As far as the picture goes, we dont control what they do or the decisions they make, Harsin said. It was up to them to do that. Its certainly been seen. ... Were not talking about revenge. We just have to go out there and do our jobs and execute. Thats really what it is.The Lobos (2-2, 1-0) will again be facing a tall task as they try to make it two straight upsets of the Broncos (4-0, 1-0).Boise State has defeated two Pac-12 teams, Washington State and Oregon State, and is one of two teams nationally that has yet to trail this season -- No. 10 Miami is the other -- but also feels it hasnt come close to reaching top form. The Broncos defeated Utah State 21-10 last Saturday as their stellar defense outperformed their more-publicized offense. Were still not there yet. We have a long way to go to where we are clicking, said sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien, who has passed for 1,024 yards and six touchdowns. I dont feel like were there yet, but I definitely see improvement. We have a lot of different pieces that we can use moving forward.Rypien isnt the only flashy component of the Boise State offense, as junior Jeremy McNichols has become one of the most versatile running backs in the West.McNichols has rushed for 504 yards and seven touchdowns this season, and he has three scoring receptions among 16 catches. He has 10 career 100-yard rushing games, including a 128-yard effort against New Mexico last season. The Broncos also feature senior receiver Thomas Sperbeck, who set single-game school records of 20 receptions and 281 receiving yards in the loss to the Lobos. On defense, Boise State is allowing just 72.0 yards per game on the ground, which ranks third in the nation. Its a figure that will be tested by New Mexicos run-based attack.Harsin sees that as a crucial element in his teams success.I know my background is offense, but Im all about the defense, Harsin said. If youre going to be a successful football team, you play very good defense.Sophomore nose tackle David Moa (5 1/2 sacks) and senior defensive end Sam McCaskill (4 1/2) have combined for more than half of Boise States 17 sacks. Senior weak-side linebacker Ben Weaver has a team-best 37 tackles. The Broncos will be without senior cornerback Jonathan Moxey for the first half. Moxey was suspended for the half after being ejected for targeting during the second half against Utah State.New Mexico is averaging 347.0 yards per game on the ground -- which ranks fourth nationally -- while averaging 38.8 points per game.Senior tailback Teriyon Gipson has 399 rushing yards and five touchdowns to go with a spectacular 12.9-yard average per carry. Sophomore running back Tyrone Owens has rushed for 308 yards, and junior reserve Richard McQuarley has 202 yards and a team-best seven rushing touchdowns.Cox (21 tackles) is the leader of the defense, but senior defensive end Garrett Hughes is enjoying the biggest season with four sacks. The Lobos are allowing 32.8 points per game, and Davie is concerned about the unit after a poor performance last Saturday in a 48-41 win over San Jose State.I just thought wed be playing at a higher level right now defensively, Davie said. I know we all feel that way across the board in this building. Custom Ivan Rodriguez Jersey . Gobert tweeted a picture of himself signing the paperwork with the caption 4 more years!Finalizing the deal in advance of Mondays 11:59 p.m. ET deadline allowed the Jazz to avoid restricted free agency on Gobert in July. The contract will fall just shy of the projected max of $106 million. It will be done today, a source close to the talks said earlier Monday.Gobert had told the Salt Lake Tribune this month that he was prepared to wait until restricted free agency in July, if necessary, but sources said Utah was motivated to get a deal done before the extensioon window closed for 2013 first-round picks to ensure that its defensive anchor stayed off the open market next summer.ddddddddddddhe Jazz are undoubtedly hoping that re-signing Gobert helps them re-sign star swingman Gordon Hayward in July if Hayward, as expected, opts out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. Utah could also try to reach terms on an extension with Derrick Favors, Goberts frontcourt sidekick, during the season; Favors became eligible for an extension on Oct. 19.Gobert, 24, was drafted No. 27 in 2013 and has career averages of 7.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Ronaldo had a tearful night as first he was injured by a strong tackle by Frances Dimitri Payet, forcing him to leave the pitch in the 25th minute of the game when he was unable to continue. He returned to the field to rally his teammates for 30 minutes of extra time when it was 0-0 after 90 minutes at the Stade de France.Defying the pain of a heavily bandaged left knee, Ronaldo took the role of assistant to coach Fernando Santos and leaped around the technical area urging on his players. When substitute forward Eder fired a fired low shot to score in the 109th minute, Ronaldo cried again and held his hands up in a prayer gesture as he walked away for a moment alone before joining the jumping huddle of celebrating Portugal players and staff.A full 12 years after a teenaged Ronaldo cried on the field in Lisbon after the Euro 2004 host Portuguese team lost 1-0 to Greece, his emotions were on show again on the big stage. This time, he left his teammates to pull off a similar upset against a favored host nation, France, on Sunday. And they did.The Portugal players quickly recovered their composure after losing their talisman midway through the first half.Ronaldo exited the pitch on a stretcher with his hands covering his face to hide the tears beneath. For the three-time world player of the year, he must have thought Euro 2016 was his best -- or evven only -- chance of a title with Portugal.ddddddddddddRonaldo was perhaps the victim of his own over-confidence and nonchalance as Payet charged in to challenge.Standing still with his right foot hovering over the ball in midfield, Ronaldo struck a teasing pose as if to taunt Payet about what he planned to do next. When Ronaldo finally passed the ball away, his weight was on his standing left leg that took the force of the Frenchmans tackle. Payets right knee bumped hard into Ronaldos left knee, and the pain was immediately obvious.Ronaldo tried to run off the injury, but repeatedly reached down with his right and left hands to gently press his knee. The Portugal team doctors treated him once on the sidelines, then bandaged the knee to give greater support.Still, Ronaldo never looked comfortable and with 23 minutes on the clock, he raised an arm to signal to Portugal coach Fernando Santos that he could not continue.Boos rained down on Payet from fans at Portugals end of the stadium when he was substituted early in the second half. After the 90 minutes ended at 0-0, Ronaldo emerged from the players tunnel to rally his teammates.Looking tense and emotional, Ronaldo went between players with hugs and words of encouragement before taking a seat in the dugout to watch the rest of the final. At half time in extra time, he urged tactical advice on long-time friend Nani and hugged the relatively inexperienced Eder.As the seconds ticked away at the end of the match, Ronaldo hugged and shoved Santos in a show of exuberant happiness. Then the tears flowed again. ' ' '

Liverpool take on German side Augsburg in the Europa League round of 32 stage on Thursday night - but what challenge will they face in the first-leg encounter? We spoke to Torben Hoffmann, a former defender for Bayer Leverkusen and 1860 Munich and now a reporter for Sky in Germany, about Augsburgs strengths, weaknesses and style - and whether Liverpool stand a good chance of progressing past them.Read on to find out more about Liverpools opponents - and remember you can follow the game across the Sky Sports platforms with our live blog… Lallana out Liverpools Adam Lallana will not play in Germany How are Augsburg doing this season? The last season was a perfect season for Augsburg, they played well all season and finished fifth, qualifying for the Europa League. But this season theyve got some problems. They are 14th in the Bundesliga and have not so much self-confidence because theyve lost a lot of games - including last weekend against Bayern Munich, their 10th league defeat of the season. Scouse phrasebook FC Augsburg have given Liverpool fans some handy German phrases One problem for them is they play in the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Europa League. They have a lot of games and not a lot of good players to rotate. So some players have been tired or injured and that has then been a big problem for Augsburg.Last season Augsburg played on a high level for the whole season and Borussia Dortmund, who are a team normally in front of Augsburg in the table, had some problems. Augsburg are not in the top five or six teams in the Bundesliga, they are in the middle.Who are Augsburgs key players? Daniel Baier, one of Augsburgs key men, is out injured Augsburg have a big problem going into this game against Liverpool - midfielder Daniel Baier is injured. Hes one of their key players and makes the rhythm in the game, playing very good passes. They also have a target player up front, Raul Bobadilla, who is their second key player. He scored six times in the Europa League group stage and is very strong and fast and can hold the ball up. Hell be important for them on Thursday.Whats their style? Torben Hoffmann says Markus Weinzierl has a similar philosophy to Jurgen Klopp Augsburgs manager, Markus Weinzierl is only 41 but hes a little bit like Jurgen Klopp, in terms of the way he likes his team to play. They like to create counter-attack opportunities, play aggressively and stay close together as a whole team on the field, holding the perfect distance between defence, midfield and offence. Both managers like the same tactics.Augsburg are also very disciplined but they have no top star in the team. Baier and Bobadilla are the only two players who will be a little bit famous. But they are a perfect group. What difficulties will Liverpool face? There will be a fantastic atmosphere at Augsburgs stadium, says Hoffmann In Augsburg there will be a fantastic atmosphere on Thursday. The stadium isnt as big as Anfield but, on a smaller scale, its a similar atmosphere in the ground to Anfield. The home support could be a little problem for Liverpool but more importantly, the Liverpool players dont know the Augsburg players and they dont know Augsburg. Its important they arrive with the right attitude.Liverpool or Augsburg - who should come out on top? The likes of Daniel Sturridge should be too much for Augsburg, says Hoffmann Liverpool will be the favourites in these two games. Their key players - Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho - have a lot of quality in the offence. The defence from Augsburg isnt very bad but also its not so good. The quality in the team from Liverpool will be better than Augsburg, thats clear. And with Sturridge, Firmino and Coutinho, there are a lot of players who will make problems. Will Liverpool win in Augsburg? Adelaide United coach Guillermo Amor must wait to learn whether hell spend more time on the sidelines for his outburst during the Reds round-seven 3-1 A-League loss to Perth.Football Federation Australias independent disciplinary and ethics committee sat in Sydney on Monday night but reserved its decision on whether to further punish Amor, who last weekend served his mandatory one-match ban for unsporting conduct towards a match official after being banished to nib Stadiums stands.Whether or not the committee throws the book at the Barcelona legend hinges on the force with which it believes Amor touched fourth official Adam Fielding as he protested a controversial decision that resulted in the Glorys second goal. The incident followed referee Jarred Gilletts decision to award Andy Keoghs 68th-minute goal straight after Glory captain Rostyn Griffiths was perceived to have fouled Reds goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. With no video evidence available, testimonies from each of the protagonists are key.Fielding submitted a report stating the feeling of the contact was not a tap, it was also not enough to push me over. It was sufficient to make me take a step forward. The usually mild-mannered Amor strongly denied pushing Fielding, arguing he merely touched him to gain his attention so he could alert Gillett to the apparent error.FFAs disciplinary council suggeested Amor may have touched Fielding with more force than he intended while in a heightened emotional state.ddddddddddddAmor, represented by Reds general manager of football Ante Kovacevic, told the committee he did not understand why hed been sent off and was confused as Fielding followed him to the bench to see through Gilletts expulsion. If I had understood at that point, or even after the game, that I had committed bad behaviour I would have gone straight to the referees changing rooms to say sorry or ask for an explanation, Amor said through a translator.Video footage directly after the incident showed the frustrated coach picking up his jacket and water bottle before wagging his finger at Fielding and saying words to the effect of you are not professional.Assistant coach Jacobo Ramallo said pushing a match official would be completely out of character for last seasons A-League coach of the year. Its difficult for me to imagine him doing this, even to think about it, Ramallo said.Being polite is easy when youre winning but he was losing every game (at the start of) last year and he was a gentleman.Amor said he will accept whatever decision is handed down in the next couple of days.Adelaide host Wellington on Sunday. Yorkshire Diamonds 166 for 6 (Blackwell 59) beat Lancashire Thunder 71 (Hazell 4-10, Brunt 3-6) by 95 runsScorecard England seamer Katherine Brunt took a hat-trick as Yorkshire brushed Lancashire aside to claim their first Kia Womens Super League win.Brunt mopped up the Thunder tail as they were 71 all out in 15 overs chasing 167, after Alex Blackwells 59 had underpinned the Diamonds 166 for 6 at Emirates Old Trafford.Unfortunately, neither side will be at Finals Day, after slow starts to the competition. Yorkshire have one fixture remaining.Brunt had Laura Newton caught at mid-on before trapping Kate Cross and Nalisha Patel lbw in a 95-run bonus point win, having also hit a breezy 36 in Yorkshires total, the second highest score of the competition.Blackwell shared 47 and 69 for the third and fourth wickets with compatriot Beth Mooney and Ashes rival Brunt as the Diamonds recovered from 16 for 2 in the fourth over having elected to bat.Blackwell hit five fours and two leg-side sixes, off Natalie Brown and Cross. The Red Rose were hurt by ill-discipline in the field, as they were last Friday when they conceded eleven wides during a defeat to Southern Vipers at Blackpool. Here, they were penalised six penalty runs for failing to bowl their overs in time, and they were very close to conceding 12 given they only just started the 19th over inside the 7.15pm cut-off time.Lancashire were on the back foot early in their chase when West Indian Hayley Matthews steered Ismail to slip as they slipped to 4 for 1 in the second over.Ismail and Brunt helped to restrict the hosts to 31 for 1 after six, although captain Amy Satterthwaite ended the power play with successive boundaries off Katie Levicks leg-spin.But Lancashires chances of a second win in their last match were up shortly afterwards as they lost three wickets in eleven balls to slip to 40 for 4 in the ninth.Hazell bowled Emma Lamb, Levick had Danni Wyatt stumped and Ismail bowled captain Satterthwaite. The Thunder reached halfway at 51 for 4, needing 116 more, before Threlkeld was controversially reprieved after being run out off a no ball.West Indian Deandra Dottin hit an above-waist high full toss to deep square-leg, where Brunt took a superb one-handed catch. With Threlkeld scrambling to get back in her ground at the non-strikers end, she was run out before the umpires ruled the ball had become dead.Thankfully, it did not matter as Hazell struck three times in five balls in the 12th and 14th overs, leaving the score at 69 for 7.She had Threlkeld caught at mid-off before bowling Natalie Brown and Dottin for 25 in the space of three balls. Then came Brunts magical end. Custom Soccer Shirts Black Friday . I cant pinpoint a date, but I do remember a player from my youth. ARLINGTON, Texas -- After Khris Davis went deep twice to reach 40 homers, the young Oakland Athletics slugger and his manager were already talking about more.I told him 45 was more impressive than 40, manager Bob Melvin said.Davis homers and three RBI led the Athletics past Texas 5-2 on Sunday and kept the Rangers from moving closer to the AL West title.Davis is the first As player to hit 40 homers since Jason Giambi had 43 in 2000. Davis has 10 homers in 15 games against Texas, breaking Oaklands single-season franchise record for homers against the Rangers. Reggie Jackson had nine in 1974.Hes pretty good, Davis said with a smile. I feel comfortable against their guys. The numbers dont lie, and I like hitting off them.Davis lined a solo shot to left field in the fourth off Colby Lewis (6-3). In the eighth, he sliced a two-run shot down the right-field line off Keone Kela, and had a huge smile on his face rounding the bases for the 40th time this season -- and 100th time in his career. It was just because everybodys been knocking at me for it, so I was just like its out of the way, Davis said. My teammates were happy for me, so I enjoyed that one. ... Weve still got a couple of more weeks. I dont know why 45 is out of the question. The As have 13 games remaining, including three games next weekend against Texas to wrap up their home schedule. With two weeks left in the regular season, the magic number for the AL-leading Rangers (88-62) to clinch the division title remained at five games. While already guaranteed consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 2007-09, the As (66-83) won two of three in Texas to wrap up a 6-1 road trip in which they scored 65 runs. The only loss on the trip was in the Friday night opener against Teexas when the Rangers scored twice with two outs in the ninth.ddddddddddddThat was a great trip. Beating Kansas City four in a row, losing just a really, really tough game here and responding the next two games, Melvin said. I cant say enough about the desire and commitment these guys still have to finishing out the season strong.Left-hander Ross Detwiler (2-3) went 5 1/3 innings and limited the Rangers to two runs after going 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in his previous six games. Ryan Dull pitched the ninth for his third save in five chances.Texas got its runs with four consecutive hits off Detwiler with one out in the third.Detwiler nearly gave up more runs with two outs in the fifth. Adrian Beltre hit a line drive toward the center field wall. Rookie center fielder Brett Eibner raced back and made a diving catch near the warning track.Eibners might be the play of the game because if that gets by now were in a completely different game, Melvin said. When the ball was hit, I didnt think he would catch it.HEALY HEATING UPIn addition to Davis eight-game hitting streak, 3B Ryon Healy has a nine-game streak after two hits Sunday. He hit .467 (14 or 30) on the trip.WHOS IN FIRST?The As havent played against Texas like a team that trails the Rangers by 21 1/2 games. The teams have split 16 games this season. We just put our head down and do our job, and expect to win no matter who were playing, Melvin said.TRAINERS ROOMAthletics: Sonny Gray (strained right forearm) is expected to throw another bullpen session Tuesday.UP NEXTAthletics: Oakland starts its final homestand of the season on Monday night against Houston. GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Southeastern Conference might be on its way to making more history. The powerhouse football league, which won an unprecedented seven consecutive national championships (2006-12) and eight in the last 10 years, could have a record number of first-round picks in the 2017 NFL draft.Yes, its early and the big event is still six months away. But with mock drafts being updated weekly, its becoming clear that the SEC is loaded -- as usual -- with top NFL talent. There might even be more than ever before.CBS Sports latest projection has half the first round coming from the SEC. ESPN, meanwhile, has 15 SEC players ranked among its top 32 prospects. The league shares the record for the most first-round picks from one conference with the Atlantic Coast Conference, which had 12 in 2006. The SEC tied it in 2013, and also set a record with 63 players drafted that year.Oh yeah, I see it, Florida cornerback Jalen Tabor said, reeling off a list of the leagues big names. There are a lot of guys, plenty of them.Although the conference is widely regarded as Alabama and everybody else, the talent pool runs deep -- especially on the defensive side of the ball -- as more than half of the 14 teams could have at least one first-rounder in April.---Heres a look at how some of the highly touted players are doing as the SEC nears the seasons halfway point:- LSU safety Jamal Adams: He might be a better pro prospect than Alabamas Mark Barron (2012) and LSUs Eric Reid (2013). The junior has 19 tackles and seems like a lock to get drafted higher than his father, George, who was taken 19th overall by the New York Giants in 1985.- Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen: Although hes unlikely to come close to his goal of breaking Derrick Thomas Football Bowl Subdivision sack record (27 set in 1988), Allen is clearly the Tides undisputed leader on defense. The senior has four sacks, six quarterback hurries and a fumble return for a touchdown.- Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett : After recording 10 sacks in each of his first two seasons, Barnett has five this year -- all in SEC play. Hes seven shy of Reggie Whites school record (32). He means as much to this team and this unit as any player on any team on any unit, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said.- Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley: He hasnt been as dominant as predecessors Sharrif Floyd, Dominique Easley, Dante Fowler or Jonathan Bullard, but the fourth-year junior has shown flashes. He has eight tackles and a sack, raising speculation about whether his production can match his potential.- Georgia running back Nick Chubb: After missing most of two games with a sprained left ankle, Chubb returned to form with 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns at South Carolina last week. The junior ranks fifth in the league in rushing, carrying 100 times for 546 yards and five scores.- Vanderbilt linebacker Zach Cunningham: He leads the league with 62 tackles and 10 1/2 tackles for loss. His size, speed and versatility will allow him to play multiple spots at the next level.- Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster: An intimidating defender who has can run sideline to sideline with just about anyone, Foster leads the Tide with 37 tackles. He left last weeks game at Arkansas with a concussion.- LSU running back Leonard Fournette: One of the most dynamic players in the country, Fournette has missed two games because of a sprained left ankle and would have sat out last week at Florida had the game not been postponed. After running for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2015, Fournette has 386 yards and two scores this season.- Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett: Its easy to see why NFL scouts consider Garrett a top-five pick, maybe even the overall No. 1 selection. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound junior runs the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds, has a 38 1/2-inch vertical jump and continues making plays despite a leg injury. Heres a guy with a bright future and with a lot at stake, coach Kevin Sumlin said. That tells you where he is as a person. Not just a great football player, but a great person.- Missouri defensive end Charles Harris: A zero-star recruit in high school, Harris has used a relentless motor to become Missouris best player. He had 18 1/2 tackles for loss and seven sacks as a sophomore last year, but had a slow start this season while adjusting to a new scheme. He has 19 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks.- Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey: The son of former NFL running back Bobby Humphrey, Marlon Humphrey is becoming known for more than being the guy who recovered the Tides pivotal onside kick in the national title game against Clemson. Hes emerged as a shutdown corner.- Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly : Despite a difficult early schedule, the senior ranks third in the league with 1,596 yards passing and 13 touchdowns. Hes struggled with sacks and turnovers, but has been better the last two weeks against Georgia and Memphis.- Tennessee linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin: A senior and team captain who recorded more than 100 tackles in each of the last two years, Reeves-Maybin could be done for the season with a shoulder injury. It also could affect his draft stock. Coach Butch Jones says hes still looking at some different options for what avenues he wants to pursue.- Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson: The 6-foot-6, 320-pound left tackle hasnt missed a start in his college career (35 games). He was a big reason the Tide won the Joe Moore Award as the nations top line in 2015.- Tabor: Floridas junior cornerback served a one-game suspension for fighting in practice and was humbled by a loss at Tennessee. Otherwise, hes been as good as advertised with three interceptions in four games.- Alabama linebacker Tim Williams: Mostly coming off the bench as a pass-rush specialist, Williams has 3 1/2 sacks and a team-leading seven quarterback hurries.---AP Sports Writers David Brandt, Brett Martel, Steve Megargee, Kristie Rieken, Teresa Walker and John Zenor contributed to this report.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Devils Jerseys China . MONTREAL -- The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens, two longtime rivals, played an old-school contest on Monday night. After all the heavy hitting, Bostons Ryan Spooner got the final blow.Spooner scored in overtime and his goal withstood a video review, lifting the Bruins over the Canadiens 2-1.Spooner got his goal 3:20 into OT on a partial breakaway off a nice give-and-go with Torey Krug. Montreal challenged, claiming Spooner was offside, but the goal stood. That ended a rough-and-tumble game between franchises that first met in 1924.You saw a lot of hitting tonight, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. A lot of borderline hits, something we hadnt seen between these two teams for a while. The fans seemed to love it.Well try to keep within the rules and continue to make some exciting games between the two teams. It didnt take long for the bad blood to spill over between the rivals.Alexei Emelin set the tone for the encounter 13 minutes in with a big shoulder-to-shoulder body check along the boards on David Pastrnak.Krug answered seconds later with an elbow to the head on Andrew Shaw in open ice in the neutral zone. The Habs winger went straight to the dressing room but was back for the start of the second period. There was no penalty on Krug on the play.It was a good hit, Julien said.Montreals Brendan Gallagher disagreed. Gallagher took matters into his own hands, dropping the gloves with Krug with five minutes remaining in the first. When you see your teammate get up the way Shaw did, he had blood coming from his face, Shaw would have done that for every guy on this team, Gallagher said. Its tough whenever you play this team. A lot of emotions involved.Austin Czarnik also scored for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask made 30 saves while Boston handed Montreal a rare home loss.Paul Byron scored late in the third period to salvage a point for the Canadiens. Carey Price stopped 27 shots in defeat, just his fifth loss in 21 starts this season.David Krejci appeared to give the Bruins a victory 59 seconds into overtime, but officials determined Pastrnak had interfered with Price. The loss was only Montreals third at the Bell Centre this year (14-1-2).The second period featured fewer dust-ups and was more about Price and Rask repeatedly frustrating their opponents.Price denied Czarnik on a partial break early in the frame. The Canadiens netminder then made a big pad save on Patrice Bergeron later on in the period.Rasks biggest stop in the second was when he went down and stacked the pads on Tomas Plekanec, just seconds after Pastrnak hit the post at the other end of the rink.Czarnik broke the deadlock with 1:05 remaining in the middle frame. The 24-year-old beat Price for his third goal of the season when he fired a shot between Prices pad and blocker while on a 2-on-1. Nathan Beaulieu was the lone defenseman back, but his sliding effort just missed Czarniks shot. The last time I went up high and he got it with his stick, Czarnik said. So I figured I would just shoot it low, just get it on net and create something and it went in.Rask kept his shutout bid alive until 16:48 of the third period when Byron scored on Montreals 29th shot on goal. After a scramble in front of Rasks net, the goalie lost track of the puck as Byron backhanded home his 10th of the campaign.Game notes Price was denied his 250th NHL win. ... Rask is now 6-15-3 in his career versus the Canadiens. ... Pastrnak leads the Bruins with 18 goals.UP NEXTBruins: Play at Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.Canadiens: Host San Jose on Friday night. MIAMI -- Florida pro basketball is bad right now -- really bad.On the eve of Tuesdays game between the Orlando Magic (12-17) and the Miami Heat (9-19) at AmericanAirlines Arena, lets take stock in the fortunes of these two organizations.First, though, some perspective: Of the four states with multiple NBA teams -- a list that also includes California, Texas and New York -- only Florida lacks at least one team with a winning record. In addition, there are only two teams worse than the Magic and Heat in the 15-team Eastern Conference -- the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers.The Magic havent been to the playoffs since 2012 and havent won a postseason series since 2010 -- both feats accomplished during the tenure of coach Stan Van Gundy.Orlando fired Van Gundy in May of 2012 despite the fact that he had made the playoffs in each of his five seasons. Since he was terminated, the Magic have dismissed three coaches -- including one interim -- in four years.New coach Frank Vogel is in his first year in the land of Mickey Mouse. But whats really troublesome to Orlando fans is the fact that despite four straight losing years -- all with 35 or less wins -- the Magic has failed to capitalize in the draft. Of the 16 selections they have made in the past decade, only one -- Aaron Gordon -- is producing even modest numbers for Orlando.Gordon, taken with the fourth pick in the 2014 draft, is a 6-9 forward averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds.Worse yet for Orlando, the Magic are coming off a horrible home loss, falling 100-79 to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. We have guys who are not giving us enough and are selfish, Magic center Bismack Biyombo told the media after that game in a very telling statement. We are playing selfish basketball, and that is not going to get us anywhere.Bad drafts, unstable management and a lack of effort is a putrid mix for Orlando. But even with all that, the Magic still has a better record than the Heat, and that has to really bother a Miami franchise that had been among the best in all of pro sports during their four-year run with LeBron James. The Heat do have stable management with team president Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra, a proven winner now in his ninth season as the head coach, including two NBA titles.A lot of Miamis problems have to do with injuries. They started the season with shooting guards Josh Richardson and Wayne Ellington injured for numerous games. Shooting guard Dion Waiters got hurt, and so did forward Justise Winslow.Ellington, perhaps Miamis purest shooter, came back and is now hurt again with a hamstring injury. Waiters has missed 12 straight games, although he could be back soon.Im running as hard as I can -- as close to game speed as possible, Waiters said. Its up to (the Heat) whenever they think Im ready. But heres the thing with the Heat: Even if they were to get healthy and remain that way for the rest of the season, its doubtful they have enough talent to make a run for the playoffs, especially considering the hole they have dug.The Heat have two upper-echelon talents, and both are still in the primes of their careers: 27-year-old center Hassan Whiteside, who is averaging 17.6 points, 14.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks; and 30-year-old point guard Goran Dragic, who is averaging 19.1 points and 6.7 assists. But where the decline of the Heat is truly evident is on the wings. Gone are Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron, who have been replaced by the likes of players such as Rodney McGruder and Josh McRoberts. If you compile a list of Heat players who have made at least nine starts this season and yet shoot less than 40 percent from the floor, it will be lengthy, with names such as Waiters, Winslow, Luke Babbitt, McGruder, McRoberts, Richardson and Derrick Williams.Winslow, a lottery pick last season who plays terrific defense, is a keeper. He should still be a junior at Duke and is only 20 years old.Richardson, 23, could still turn things around. Both players need to hone their jump shots, however.James Johnson and Tyler Johnson -- no relation -- have been productive bench players for the Heat. But until they are able to surround Dragic and Whiteside with quality shooters, their demise will continue. The victory will prompt discussions regarding a Breeders Cup race goal for the 6-year-old Vyjack here in four weeks-- the $1 million Dirt Mile on Nov. 4, or the $2 million Mile on turf on Nov. 5.Before the race, trainer Phil DAmato said he preferred the Dirt Mile. The win in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile may have changed the outlook.Ridden by Flavien Prat, Vyjack beat the previous course record of 1:31.78 set by Wise Dan in the 2012 Breeders Cup Mile.Santa Anita installed a new turf course in June. The course was used for the first time for the start of the autumn meeting on Sept. 30.Vyjack ($10.60) was the beneficiary of a torrid pace in the City of Hope Mile that helped his late kick through the final three furlongs.Vyjack was sixth early, well behind pacesetter Obviously, who disputed the pace with Frank Conversation through an opening quarter-mile in 21.40 seconds. Obviously led by 1-1/2 lengths after a half-mile in 43.97 seconds.Om, a 5-2 shot, closed from fourth to pose a challenge to Obviously in early stretch before Vyjack rallied three wide to take the lead in the final sixteenth.Vyjack finished a half-length in front of Om, who was a half-length in front of Obviously, the even-money favorite. Perfectly Majestic finished fourth, followed by Hootenanny, Patriots Rule, Express Himself, St. Joe Bay, Ed Johnson, and Frank Conversation.Om looked like a winnerr on the turn, but could not hold off Vyjack.ddddddddddddI liked the spot all the way until the other horse caught me, said Dan Hendricks, who trains Om.Phil DAmato trains Vyjack and Obviously. He credited Prat with putting in time in the morning to learn Vyjacks tendencies.Flavien has gotten to know what the horse can and cant do, DAmato said.DAmato said jockey Tyler Baze followed instructions to take Obviously to the lead even though the 8-year-old gelding was vigorously urged to get past Frank Conversation and St. Joe Bay in the opening quarter-mile.He did what I told him to do and got to the front, DAmato said.Owned by Pick Six Racing, Vyjack has won 8 of 27 starts and earned $1,321,900. The Grade 2 City of Hope Mile was Vyjacks first win since an allowance race at Keeneland in April and his first stakes win since the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park in September 2014. Vyjack was trained by Rudy Rodriguez at the time, and joined DAmatos stable in California earlier this summer.DAmato said Obviously will be considered for the BC Mile or the BC Turf Sprint on the hillside turf course on Nov. 5.Well keep our options open with both horses, he said. The final time left DAmato somewhat surprised. The turf course is so fast and everyone is trying to feel out where you need to be on the track, he said. I dont see that kind of pace happening in the Breeders Cup Mile. ' ' '

The India star (62 from 44 balls) hit his second fifty of the season before Englands Jos Buttler fired a rapid 28 off 14 deliveries as the defending champions trumped Bangalores 170-7 with 12 balls in the bank following back-to-back defeats to Gujarat Lions and Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier in the week.Slow left-armer Krunal Pandya (2-27) had dented Bangalores knock by dismissing Virat Kohli (33 from 30) and AB de Villiers (29 from 21) in the 11th over and bright, late cameos from youngsters Travis Head (37 from 24) and Sarfaraz Khan (28 from 18) proved in vain as the visitors slipped to a second defeat in a row. Marcus North and Rob Key were impressed with the nature of Mumbai Indians win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. Bangalore were shorn of Chris Gayle at Wankhede Stadium after the Jamaican flew home for the birth of his first child, with Kohlis team making six changes to the XI that lost to a Quinton de Kock-inspired Delhi Daredevils last time out.Gayles replacement, Lokesh Rahul (23 from 14), provided ample entertainment, cracking two fours and two sixes from the four balls immediately before hee clipped Mitchell McClenaghan - who had earlier struck him on the helmet - to slip.ddddddddddddKohli and De Villiers came into the game on the back of successive fifties against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi, and threatened to pass the milestone again as they shared a stand of 59 for the second wicket in 39 deliveries. Krunal Pandya dismissed Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers However, the pair fell to Pandya in the space of five balls - Kohli caught at long-off, De Villiers stumped - while Shane Watson made just five before edging Jasprit Bumrah (3-31) behind as Bangalore lost three wickets for eight runs.Head, though, impressed on his IPL debut, the Australian left-hander - who creamed a century for Adelaide Strikers in this years Big Bash - adding 63 from 34 balls with the inventive Sarfaraz prior to being run out in the final over. Heads team-mate and countryman, Kane Richardson, then picked up a wicket with his first ball for Bangalore, the seamer forcing Parthiv Patel (5) to skew to De Villiers at point at the start of the second over.Sharma and Rayudu (31 from 23), however, soon found their rhythm, combining to amass 79 runs from 55 deliveries before they fell to the spin of Iqbal Abdulla (3-40) in the 11th and 13th overs respectively.Buttler became Abdullas third victim in the 16th after smiting the slow left-armer for successive sixes down the ground from the previous two balls, leaving Kieron Pollard (40no from 19) to pummel Mumbai over the line, the West Indian clubbing four boundaries and three maximums.Catch more IPL action on Thursday as unbeaten Gujarat Lions face Eoin Morgan and Sunrisers Hyderabad. That clash is live on Sky Sports 3 from 3pm. ' ' '

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Thats an interesting question, because I dont know that it fully describes what the dynamics are here at Notre Dame, head coach Brian Kelly said, beginning a convoluted answer to a simple question that had seemingly vexed the three men who held this seat before him.Hes sitting in a chair in his corner office on the eve of his seventh training camp with the Fighting Irish. The ink is dry on a six-year extension signed this winter that, should he see it through, will make him the longest-tenured Notre Dame coach not named Knute Rockne. That prospect may have seemed ludicrous after an uneven opening act in Years 1 and 2, which preceded an NFL dalliance just as he made things right in Year 3. That created uneasy tension among his constituency every time his program seemed to turn a new corner -- or worse, every time his program hit a roadblock. Now, though, Kelly seems to want for little. Notre Dame and its 212-person travel party took off an hour south for Culver Academies later that day to start camp off-site for a fourth-straight year, and for a third-straight year at Culver, where Kellys two oldest kids attend school. The relocation, undoubtedly a pricey one, is something of a routine now, after no Irish team left campus for camp since Lou Holtzs final outfit in 1996. And that accompanying labor force -- which includes a revamped support staff across departments like recruiting, nutrition, player development and video -- has swelled by roughly 20 since Kellys 2010 arrival.Thats to say nothing of the more visceral changes under Kelly at a place so often averse to revisions, from FieldTurf replacing Notre Dame Stadiums famed natural grass to Under Armour replacing Adidas as an apparel provider to a long-awaited videoboard highlighting the stadiums current renovation, which will be completed in 2017. Or well, to the not-so-insignificant matter of winning.Following the retirements of Steve Spurrier and Frank Beamer, Kelly now enters 2016 as the winningest active FBS coach (226). Hes churned out six first-round draft picks in his first six years, or twice as many as his three predecessors combined to produce in the 13 years before he got here. Three of his coordinators became head coaches, with a fourth, Mike Sanford, already in demand after one season under Kelly. Kellys run of six straight eight-plus-win seasons to start a tenure is an Irish first. So back to that question: How long did it take this guy to get Notre Dame, and to be comfortable with himself here? And more pertinent to his delegation, is he a Notre Dame lifer?Second answer first: Kellys not a coaching lifer, as if his roundabout entry into the profession werent already a tell. His laugh when pressed on that topic confirmed he will not go into the grave with the whistle around his neck. But what are his future plans?I have never been that person that has looked far into the advance of, Hey, I want to do this, Kelly said. I was never that way even at Central Michigan, like, Hey, I want this job. I was always about the immediate. I dont mind being reminded about what I did in the past, but Ive always stayed in the present. I really dont know. I dont know what the challenges are going to be like in five to six years. Ill find something. I know what I like to do. But I dont have a plan other than the day-to-day here of coaching Notre Dame football.Im pretty good at figuring out when I get there. His likes, he adds, include being around people, which surprises no one familiar with his early foray into politics. And in his current profession, there is something to be said for lasting seven years in one place, especially as a father of 19- and 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl who saw their dad go three-and-out at his two previous stops, at Central Michigan and Cincinnati. From his two-oldest kids attending Culver (the youngest plays prep football locally) to the familys purchase of a summer house in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, the Michiana region has become the closest thing the family of five has had to a permanent residence. They like Cincinnati, but they dont go back there. Mount Pleasant, they dont go back there. Grand Rapids, they were too young to even remember what the street was that they grew up on, Kelly said of his kids. This is home for them now. And thats why we bought a house up on the lake, and well never sell that house. So there has to be a place sometime along this journey that they come home to. And theyll always come back here now. So this has become home for them.Getting Notre Dame to the national title game in Year 3 showed what Kelly is capable of when everything breaks right. Perhaps more impressively, winning 10 games last year despite a comical amount of injuries showed what he can do even when the football gods conspire against him. That Kelly lifted a hamstrung Notre Dame team to within four points of a perfect regular season in his first year with all of his own recruits and didnt depart for greener pastures afterward suggests he can more or less exit on his own terms, whenever that may be.To really build a program is a four-, five-year proposition, to get all the pieces in place, athletic director Jack Swarbrick said. And thats what were seeing now. To me last year was a testament to this program is in as good a place as its been for two decades. ... And 12 bought us the time to do it right. No move may illustrate Kellys job security -- or gumption, for the uninitiated -- than his decision this month to open the season with an offensive system that features two quarterbacks with strikingly similar skill sets.It is perplexing. It is without any real successful precedent. It was, and may still be, controversial.I swear Im Coach Kellys favorite quarterback the way these challenges keep coming up, Malik Zaire said upon the announcement, tongue firmly planted-in-cheek.If it works, Notre Dame may be a playoff team, making up for a green defense. If it doesnt, and both Zaire and DeShone Kizer leave, Kelly can simply turn to third-stringer Brandon Wimbush, a player good enough to start at most places. In any event, Kelly appears in this for the long haul. He was adamant late last season about how much more control he has at Notre Dame than he ever could have at the NFL level.Cases in point: Academics and athletics are as in-sync as they ever have been, even if the football program has had high-profile academic casualties in each of the past four years. Tax records released this spring revealed that Notre Dame has a million-dollar assistant in defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder. Even the latest drama surrounding two arrests involving six players this month gave way to a 329-word statement from Kelly that left little doubt about who was the primary decision-maker in booting one starter off the team and disciplining several others.Maybe as simply as not apologizing for wanting to be good at football, and understanding that, we can be who we are academically and still be really good at football, Kelly said of the program changes. That shift of not having to apologize in a sense of wanting to invest in football, and give us the resources, and allow us to attract the very best coaches, and give us the best facilities, and give us the things necessary to be successful. I think that dialogue, that began when I came here, and its probably allowed a lot of these things to happen. With that came support. And with that support came more initiative. Kelly has worn many hats in his Notre Dame reign, and the 26-year head-coaching veteran will be the first to say he hasnt always worn them all right. But hes brought stability to a program that was in desperate need of it. He has the program thinking reload instead of rebuild for the first time in a long time, with the Irish in position to post consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time since Holtzs days. Kelly is, on the brink of Year 7, as comfortable as he has ever been. And for the first time in a long time at Notre Dame, the feeling is mutual.I was comfortable in my own skin as a coach of 19 years, but I really didnt know Notre Dame, because I didnt go here. I didnt know the hierarchy; I didnt know the politics. I didnt know all the dynamics of Notre Dame, Kelly said. And so thats what took me more time, was to figure out the board of trustees, the administration, the alumni -- all those moving parts and how all of that kind of comes into your life on a day-to-day basis. So comfortable in own skin really relates to knowing how to navigate Notre Dame.Knowing that each challenge that youre presented with, there is a code that you have to dial into to do it properly, and if you dont, youre not going anywhere. And so learning that took a few years. Custom Frank Robinson Jersey .
